Navi-GT11 can now anticipate what you want to see on the screen during Speed Sailing. The new function is called SPEED GENIE.
SPEED GENIE automatically changes SPEED screens + resets MAX and AVG speeds. After each run you will see your MAX speed and your best N-second average speed without using buttons.
GT11 computes the average N-second speed as accurately as PC-based GPS software using the trapezoidal integral average (see
http://nujournal.net/HighAccuracySpeed.pdf for details). So, if you reach a World Record or a PB, you will know it before you come back ashore.
Knowing your exact performance you will be able to focus on sailing: tuning your gear and technique.
To set up SPEED GENIE:
1. upgrade the firmware to 0907a or above (see
http://mtbest.net/setting-up-navi-GT-11.htm) for instructions)
2. Set SETTINGS>SPEED GENIE to the speed threshold of your choice. I suggest 20-to-30 knots.
3. Set SETTINGS>SPEED AVG TIME to 10s (or if you aim for a 500m speed record set it to 21s)
4. Set CARD>NMEA ITEMS to SBN 1 SEC (the firmware upgrade above may modify this setting). Check other settings too as advised in link from 1a.
5. Enter the SPEED section in GT11 main menu. Once your settings 1..4 are in place this is the only thing to do before sailing. SPEED GENIE is only active in the SPEED section of GT11.
You can operate GT11 manually, but you need to come back to the SPEED section when you need the GENIE to work.
Computers should be smart enough to assist us, even if we are too busy to assist them.
