3 sailors trained and skilled :
- 80 kg, 180 cm : Manta 79 + Vapor 9,0 2008 + 46 hurricane sr2
- 73 kg, 175 cm : Manta 85 + Warp 10,0 2007 + 50 techart
- 75 kg, 177 cm : JP 134 '08 + TR-4 9,2 + 48 stock
conditions :
- first 1h 11-15 gusty off shore.Sometime less than 9
- then 2h 13-22 cross on shore.Flat-like
first part of the session I suffered a lot agaist them because of the smallest stuff,I'm the worst planner and the strong wind-like trim.No big problem while reaching but often I've given up after gybe in the dying gusts. So the real issue was the rhythm. In that marginal and gusty air the Manta 85 showed up a consistent performance (better than I thought).Always first to keep planning and very few times in fault because tail-walking or something.Still I guess that I would loved something more nervous under my feet for "light the fire".Note that we both started with a few cm behind middle nast base but as soon the wind increased we found out it was better back to right the middle.Another great point is the huge gybe ability of both boards.
1 h later the wind almost died and I've changed my sail with the tr-4.It was set with a huge amount of cm in the extension so the clew was too high and the boom too orizzontal. It was very bad.Did some leg and got ashore (evenly because the wind changed direction to cross on shore and increased till 22 kts). What's better to figure out how good are those sizes in this sort of wind??
After having shortened the total extension lenght and having DH +2 cm I returned in the water. The sail was completely different and I had no problem at all to control in that wind.Ok I should have been faster with some smaller stuff but the main goal was to check the stuff in the condition.
Even my 79 seemed different.Much more smoothly powered up (compared to my Vapor) it tracked so fine face to the chop and never slowed down or made me sheet out for the sail power.
What amazed me was the smooth accelleration of the tr-4.It seems slow (compared to my Vapor) but my gps showed that it was as fast as my 9,0 when solid powered up and a bit faster under 13-14 kts.You can almost bear off and the sail follows you.No limit. While, even releasing the boom,my Vapor can't "abbatre" too much without slowing down. The tr-4 has that springy feel and you have just wait for power or it's available on demand. It never charges the fin too much.It has some big advantages:it's possible reduce fin size being faster, the gybe is much more smooth because the leech attends the fin over the curve so the rail has a constant pressure and provides for such great turns, the board nose never comes up and the ride will be much more comfortable and safe.I've found my 79 more agreable with this sail.
Just to let you know,my 9,0feeling is right in the middle between a NP loocked in feeling and the tr-4 soft touch. It's a compact sail and a lighter guy will enjoy it better than me.There's present a huge amount of luff curve that stabilizes the sail in the strong gusts. It can be agreed by average weights that search a sail that is very sensible to OH trim difference.
Remain to say that the guy with the biggest stuff was always present in the pack.It showed how good the 85 is even with a light guy sailing.
Last one was the test of the 134.Disliked at all with the Vapor 9,0.Never right fired up (probably due the poor fin quality) it appeared a bit deaf.Ok,it was lower than precedent model but now I understand the words of Damien Le Guen who wanted sail the board with the 9,8...
Things got better when I sailed it with the 9,2 but nothing really special.
