So far only 1 x 7.7 (14/20 kts) and 1 x 7.0 (16/27 kts) in the same little chop gusty spot.
The MY 2021 is very different compared to the previous IS. Much fatter behind the mast track and kinda thinner in the front section. Got no time yet to measure the width between front and rear footstraps but I suspect the new board is tiny wider.
No need to say that all of the above reasons and a very stiff construction make for a very reactive board when you are going to start planning. I’ve noticed also that the first part of the reach is way more solid. Board tracks clean and free with heaps of power to point where you want, attack or defend while racing. Not yet clear to me how it behaves when the going gets tough. I’m sorry but I’m not yet in perfect shape to give my stuff the right input, so my feeling could come from a wrong point of view.
Anyway. So far it seems there’s loads of lift available. In the rough I needed to calm it down (only worked on boom height and harness lines length). Next time I’ll test different mast base placement. To be fair I have to say I didn’t really bear off as f...k. Just little angled reaches. The well clear nose probably will help along the “normal” tracks when it’s choppy.
Being the volume more in the tail you can use the 7.7 in less wind than usual. On the opposite side I think it needs more power/leverage at high revs. I usually don’t like (too much) the 7.0/72 combination. I feel it’s going to be the same this season too...
Gybing is the best ever for a 72. Steady, easy, secure. The best thing is when you’re ready to reach for the other mark. Always on top of the pack with plenty of power available.

To be continued...

Sessions are keeping on and i'm getting used to the board.
Changed the footstraps and mast base placement, the board rides steadier and safer. It's super stiff and reactive. Super high cruising speed and some flashy acceleration put always a smile in the rider face.
Volume and width are there but you never feel they're not useful.
Gybes are crazy crazy good and thene you have load of surface to push against to quickly accelerate and stay where you want to attack or recover from a fellow attack.
Maybe, when it's light for the sail, a good soft fin will help to better rail it up. Still testing...
Good scores for the spot with no effort.

Thanks for the reports giu :D
What fins are you using on this board ?
I’ve the 2019 72, and i prefer the board with 7,0 than 7,6 ! I use 38 ZSL S- 38 with 7,6 and 38 ALF WITH 7,0 !

Sergio, i'd like to be more "scientific" but, as said earlier, I'm not in the best shape to perfectly comment on every performance aspect of the new 72.
I updated the 72 2019 (which i loved so much) with the new one. In the beginning i struggled a bit to find the right settings and this was making me think "weird thoughts"... Now, after different tests (mainly with my 7.7), I'm confident the new one is a real upgrade vs the MY 2019.
Not sure Vmax is higher (even tough it's easier to fastly cruise) but for sure the level of the general performance is way better. You almost have no dead moments. Always ON. In my eyes there are no weak points. During the session you're alwais in "gaining mode". I needed also to change a little bit my position on the board.
Some "pro" says the Isonic need soft fins to better "rail" them. Honestly I can't really comment that as i got no chance to test different fins than my Tribal mk2 (37/36). In my experience, for my specs and way of sailing, those fins are somewhere in between soft and stiff. The right amunt of lift, steady tracking, can be strongly bent at low speed with no spin out, for sure fast and safe. I'd no use bigger than 37/7.7. Board tail is already very powerful and the reflex construction provides the right amount of "nerve" to lift the board up. Will test my old 38 when the 8.5 will be in the box.

Hi Giu,
How long did it take you to recover from your nasty injury?
All good now?

Back sailing after 3 months.
Some pain is still there and i cannot fully pull up the boom with the left arm.
Plus, during my 3rd session i got ANOTHER CRAZY CATAPULT (using my buddy IS 72 2020 to compare) during a wild session in the very rough. Luckly there was no body problem but somehow this crash totally turned my mind and confidence OFF. Now i sail with sort of hand brake...

It t will probably take you a dozen sessions to be able to commit fully when you sail, and get back to your previous level. Just keep in mind that no matter how good an iSonic 72 is over chop, every board has its limits, and so does every rider.
Better luck to you from now on!

:D

P.S. The injury happened while i was sailing different board.
PP.SS: My little comparative test of the borrowed IS 72 MY 2020 happened while I was way overpowered in 8.7 and 85 cm (because wind/chop/swell suddenly increased in unexpected way)

Hello.

Merci d'avance.

Go for it. You won't regret (if you like the Isonic feeling)
