Well ... in Open Ocean the distance one can swim can be easily be zero. Waves, current, cross or off-shore wind, chop. You'd be surprised. People have died literally meters from shore where I live ...

Unless I missed it, nobody mentions VHF radios? I sail up to 3-4 km out and I always keep it with me. Last year I rescued a friend (disconnected from his board while Winging), and in another instance myself (fin sheared off completely). In both cases in offshore wind with no hope to make it back to shore (although, this is a Bay, we would have landed on the other side, 8 km away ... in couple of days.)

This is what I always bring with me: the VHF radio with GPS locator, an emergency strobe light, an emergency harness line (just a piece of 5mm line with a small PVC tube that I can easily tie on the boom), a small bottle of water.

BTW: The chinook Pro-bolt is not recommended for anything but foiling according to Chinook. It is: "** Specifically designed for Foiling (Not recommended for Bump and Jump, Slalom or Formula Racing. If used as such warranty is null and void***"

So far I have used mine only for foiling, but do you have any idea why it should not be used for any other practice?

No idea, I have two and the first one uses a slightly longer tendon and has developed a lot of play around the tendon ... I did contact Chinook and they confirmed what the quote says (the quote does appear on their web site ...). They were also so kind to send me a replacement mast base. Too bad because I really like the Pro-bolt, it helps with foiling but you can also leave the base on the board all the time.

The model that you can leave on the board all the time has two bolts, which reduces the distance that you can move the mast-foot back to front in the rail, and so your range of adjustment is reduced. For this reason, I prefer the one-bolt model, which allows me to position the mast-foot all the way to the front if I am really overpowered, or on the contrary, position it all the way to the back in case I am severely underpowered.

Yes, I mostly have two bolts on my board. What I meant is that once you tilt the Pro-bolt the side it sticks out less than the footstraps, so it can stays on my car rack with no problem. Too bad Chinook tells you not to use it ...

Manuel, yes, that is exactly my point. The sea can kill you very quickly. There is no "distance you can safely swim back". Most of the time when we go out is windy with chop and waves and you cannot really count on swimming safely to shore. (And yes, you know, English: the international language (I am Italian)).

==============

Davide or Thierry ... I may miss something but what is the real advantage of having the two bolts version? As Thierry mentioned, the one bolt is easier and has more span in its rail .. and you can still do small adjustments on the water .. no need of screwdriver .. so what's the point of this two bolt model?
