Sujet du message:  Phantom RF for slalom

Hello,

We tested a 6.0 Phantom Rf with a 2019 Isonic 87 (60 wide) on Maui, Talon 32, 20-25mph. Testers were unanimous in their reports:

1. Very fast ( referenced to Venom, North Warp)
2. Ease of handing, jibes and going fas

Testers were a US national champion and very experienced local racers. The 6.0 Phantom RF has been discontinued, replaced by the Iris R MKII.

The phantom is very fast due to its low drag design, in planning condition drag becomes the dominant factor in performance. A low drag sail design is going to be faster and easier to handle. Moreover the higher aspect ratio improves the lift factor. All in all a very fast, easy handling sail. I presume the Iris R MKII will be even more so due to its higher aspect ratio.
The idea that for racing you need a large boom/cambered area to get you on plane quicker is a fallacy, it may help in sub-planning conditions, however once planning, the higher drag will affect performance. It is the lift of a sail that will determine its ability to get you on plane, and the lift coefficient of a sail is proportional to its luff length (such as the high aspect ratio Foil sails, where lift is critical). This is nothing new, just look at all the high performance boat racing sails today, designed and tested with unlimited budgets and world class talents and computers, they are all high to very high aspect ratio designs.

Cheers,
Frank
