Monday 2 november Luderitz Speed Canal November
D DAY
All signs were that this day was to be a normal semi windy day oh how wrong we were by 1130 the wind filled in to a 25knt comfy day. at the skippers meeting it was quite surreal having so many top level speed sailors in the middle of the namib desert Bjorn Dunkerbeck /Antione albeau, Eric beal, Farrel oshea .to name a few
By 12 pm the wind was showing us an unusually early big push Antione was the first to hit the canal and immediately made his mark with an impressive 50.46 knot run with a 6.4 sail this got every one motivated and patrick was quick to get on the canal some of the riders were already saying they were going to wait a little while as the wind was pushing 35knts but the angle was a bit broad causing a rolling swell half way down the canal this did not seem to worry Antione as he put in run after run at 1.14pm the inevitable was to happen the world record was broken by A2 with 52..41 97.07 klm/ hr using a 5.6 sail he went on to break his record 14 times with a final speed of 53.27knts 98.67klm/hr in two days antione put in over 60 runs.
at times the wind was over 50 knots sand was a major obstacle with all riders wearing ski goggles the wind did square off slightly but was so amazing to see such flat water in such windy conditions this is a remarkable achievement of civil engineering performed by event founder Sebastian cattelan who has pretty much dug this canal and managed it all by his own with the help of a few people i heard a lot of mixed reactions from social media about the condition of the canal and water level and choppy conditions but really it is amazing achievement by seb and his team.
there were a few wipe outs on the canal one bad one from martin ogier who crashed and dislocated his shoulder but was amazing to see all competitors helping to carry this rather large guy from the canal to the ambulance I’m glad to say he was ok as i spoke with him a few hours later he was a little shaken bit i good spirit
i am extremely privileged to have witnessed this apocalyptic day as i was only here for three days and Monday was a day that all had waited for for over 3 years
if you are serious about speed sailing then you have missed out big time
i also witnessed the fall of the womans world record which was held by zara davis karin jaggi had been pushing the last few days really hard and was very close to the world record she got the her timing rite and entered the water early within an hour she had the world record such an amazing speed sailor i watched her sailing a few foot next to the bank with no fear what a great achievement by her
And then we have Farrel Oshea what an awesome guy in the middle of the chaos and cazy conditions was this quiet british guy who put in some solid runs and finally it paid of smashing his own british record with a 51.20 not wearing any goggles either big respect to Farrel.
all in all an amazing day i will never forget
