Hi all,

New to the forum and english so hope you the translation works out but i'm advancing my wind foiling and starting to race in the UK.
I have been using my GPS to monitor my foil sessions especially speed and have noticed i am struggling to go any faster than 22 knots.

I generally find that when i am sailing at speed of 20 knots and more the increase of front foot pressure is large and the foil gets harder to maintain a stable flight and becomes very twitchy. I am using a 100cm wide board and any size sail to suit the wind strength.
Do you have any advice or tips for rig setup, mast track settings, foil settings and anything else to help to go faster. I see some posts of foilers going over 30 knots so i know its possible.

What speeds are you guys achieving and thanks for any advice.

Cheers
Jason

Hi Jason,
Welcome on windsurfing33 ! Same question as you, go beyond 20 knots is very difficult ! A tip, un truc ???? Disconnect the brain seems to be the first step

As a pure amateur I would juste point out a couple of things :
- there could be many differences between foils and setup/triming (wings, V angle...). Don't expect to extend windrange and speed, you need a dedicated configuration to go faster (and safe).
- downwind + power in the sail
- hard to explain but use the pressure from the sail and not only your weight to push down the foil. Sail should be a little more vertical and you should not release pressure, otherwise... take off !
Same wind same day :
- 18 (max 20) knots gps 5.9 sqm... relax.
- then 22 (max 24) knots gps... with the help of 7.9 sqm and smaller front wings ;)

Race foils have a strong front foot. This can be OK if you are heavy and use big sails that put a lot of pressure on the mast foot.
As a lot of pressure also means a strong pull upwind on the mast foot, it has to be compensated by a wide board to put a equivalent pressure in the foil mast.
This is the configuration for racing in light winds, not for going fast.

To go fast you'll have stronger winds and smaller sails with more balance between the top and the bottom., generating less pressure on the mast foot.
So you'll need to calm that upward tendancy of the foil. This can be acheived with a smaller wing but also by putting less angle on the stab. However, with less angle you may encounter unstability.
At Aéromod we don't care much about racing and our foil is dedicated to freeride and learning. We made it keeping in mind that the up tilting force just has to compensate the drag increase that comes with speed.
In other terms, you don't have to move forward a lot as you gain speed.
We can't clain 30 knts of speed yet (and also so have, not many people do) But I easily go 25knts with 15 knts of wind.
We have top speeds of about 28 knts (going up...)

Hi Jason, witch foil dou you have? Only a little bit of foils are made to reach 30 knts, even if you are a pro rider!

Obviously , the first thing to check is your foil model !
Then Start by moving your mast base forward, and change your front foostraps inserts positions by the more advanced.
You can also drop you wishbone position a little. These tips will change your gravity center position and help you to have power on the front foot and more control in high speed...

Grab your balls, close your eyes, go little downwind, and it should be good...

I use the Bug Slalom/Race Foil.
It has a 95cm Mast
100cm fuselage
800cm2 front wing
250cm2 stab

Agree not all foils are made for 30knots and isnt a target i am trying to achieve but feel the 25-27 knots mark is and i feel stuck at the 22 knot mark but know from regular slalom and formula racing the smallest of adjustments make the world of difference.

How much do you weight ?
800cm² seems big to go fast

Ok it seems to be a race model, with long fuselage and quite big front wing. 22 knots is a good speed for this kind of foil. Maybe you can target 24-25 knots if you go downwind with a course rig and with a good level. If you want to go faster you need a smaller front wing but however the long fuselage will always give you a lot of power on your front foot when increasing your speed, not the best if you want high speed (not enough control), but perfect to fly early and make sick upwind angles! For example in PWA Japan one of the top 15 riders told me that his best max speeds were around 24-25 knots and his cruising speed during the heats was around 22.5, because he was using a race foil upgraded for upwind, while his best speed with his speed foil with small wing (600 cm2) and 82 cm fuselage is more than 32 knots!

The best if you want to reach the maximum speed with the best control with your race foil is to use a big slalom rig because when you turn downwind the power of the sail tends to crush the front of your board, the first times it's a little bit scary but it's the only solution to balance the power of the foil on the front foot, and you will see that finally it's quite comfortable... but you have to stay full power, if you release the pressure you will reach the clouds!!!

81kg

I am not looking to break records just to sail fast on a race course to win races. this is why i use a race foil for upwind and downwind angle

I primarily use the foil to race here in the UK but to be competitive and to try and beat other foils and formula racers I want to gain some more speed. But sounds like at 22 knots im already in the right area but maybe can push a little faster.
i do currently use slalom sails to foil with so maybe like suggested above i just need to grab my balls and close my eyes :)

To really go fast a small wing and shorter fuselage length is necessary.
